Godot Sprite Sheet Guide

Make a PNG sprite sheet in SpriteFrame, then add its frames to an AnimatedSprite2D in Godot. This guide covers the handoff; SpriteFrame does not create a Godot project file.

How to use a sprite sheet in Godot

  1. Prepare the frames

Use the PNG tool for existing frames, the video tool for an MP4 clip, or the AI generator for a new animation. Preview the order and choose a frame size before exporting.

  2. Download the sheet

Choose Sprite Sheet and download the ZIP. Extract the PNG sheet and keep the JSON timing data for reference. If the export spans multiple PNG sheets, import the frames from each sheet in order.

  3. Create the animation in Godot

Add an AnimatedSprite2D, create a SpriteFrames resource, and choose “Add frames from a Sprite Sheet.” Select the PNG and set the horizontal and vertical frame counts to match its grid. Select the frames you need.

  4. Set playback

Name the animation, set its speed and loop behavior in Godot, then preview it there. The JSON describes SpriteFrame’s frame order and timing; it is not a Godot resource that imports automatically.

For pixel art, choose pixel scaling when reducing frame size. Check each exported sheet’s grid and padding before selecting cells in Godot.

Frequently asked questions

Does the JSON import into Godot automatically?

No. Import the PNG frames through SpriteFrames and use the JSON as a timing and order reference.

Can I use separate PNG frames instead?

Yes. SpriteFrame can export a numbered PNG sequence, which you can add as individual frames in Godot.
